Butterworth is the main town on the mainland side of Penang state in Malaysia.
Smaller, more industrial and practical, Butterworth does not have any of the atmosphere which Georgetown across the Penang Straits has. It is however an important transportation hub for all train and many bus services which do not go directly to Penang island.
Butterworth is also the mainland terminal for the Penang ferry.

[edit]By train
Butterworth railway station is conveniently located next to the bus and ferry terminal, south of the town centre. It is a major rail terminal for Keretapi Tanah Melayu (Malayan Railways) trains heading south to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore and north to Hat Yai in Thailand as well as the State Railways of Thailand's International Express to Bangkok.
To/from Kuala Lumpur - from Kuala Lumpur the Senandung Langkawi arrives at Butterworth at 05:40 and then departs for Hat Yai. In the other direction, the train from Hat Yai arrives at Butterworth at 22:30 and departs for Kuala Lumpur. The Ekspres Sinaran runs on Sundays between Kuala Lumpur and Butterworth. It departs Kuala Lumpur at 08:10 and arrives at Butterworth at15:50. From Butterworth, trains leave at 08:00 and arrive in Kuala Lumpur at 16:05.
From Bangkok - an overnight train departs Bangkok daily at 14:45(Thai time). It is scheduled to arrive at Butterworth at 12:55(Malaysian time) but normally gets there late, usually around 14:00-14:30. Fares vary depending on the type of berth and carriage; an air-con upper berth costs 1,120 baht (as at April 2007). The surcharge for a bicycle is 104 baht to the border; a further small freight charge may be made by KTMB for the border-Butterworth leg.
To Bangkok - the International Express leaves Butterworth daily at13:15, going via Hat Yai, Surat Thani (for Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Tao), Chumphon, Hua Hin, etc.
[edit]By bus
To/from Kuala Lumpur - almost hourly, journey takes 5 hours and costs around 25 ringgit. The bus station, is just a few yards from the train station, located under the highway overpass. Any train station representative can point you in the direction of the bus stop.
If you are in a rush to get to KL, the bus may be your best bet. The journey time can be half as long. Most of the coaches have AC, as well as other comforts. Much of the journey is very scenic.
As noted above, the prices are reasonable.
If you are concerned about securing a fair price, just ask a train station agent, most should be happy to give you a rough estimate on how much a bus will cost. Armed with this information, you can walk over to the bus staging area, which is more of a collection of ticket booths mixed in with food and beverage vendors, and find the best price.
The buses, in most cases, do not have restrooms, but, the buses make a number of breaks at rest stops, which have restrooms, and food/drink. Take note, many of the restrooms did not have toilet paper.

The much-loved Penang ferry departs regularly from the Butterworth Ferry Terminal for George Town. The ferry terminal is conveniently connected with the railway station and bus terminal via covered walkways - a rare example of good public transport planning in Malaysia. Caution when using the toilets. Travellers may want to consider using toilets at their hotels or at restaurants as the ferry toilets are infamous for their overuse and offensive odours.

The World Most Expensive Table $50,000 Expanding Table
Published on May 24, 2013
Fletcher Capstan Table
For a fantastic design and space saving idea, check out the Fletcher Capstan Table. The expansion video is very cool. However, this cool table comes with a catch. It'll cost you £25,000 to £35,000 ($50,000 to $70,000). The company's site describes, "It is a round table which, when rotated at its outer perimeter, amazingly doubles its seating capacity and, just as astonishingly, remains truly circular. Very importantly it stores its expansion leaves within itself. Existing tables can seat six persons when small, and twelve or more when expanded, but there are other design possibilities. Operation, which has been described as 'pure magic' by Boat International magazine, really is a sight to behold and extremely quick, it taking only three seconds to complete an entire expansion or reduction cycle."

Thai bomb narrowly avoids protest leader
Published on Jan 24, 2014
A bomb has gone off in the Thai capital of Bangkok, wounding more than 30 people attending an anti-government protest march. Both the government and the protestors are blaming each other for the explosion, which landed 30 metres from the anti-government movement's leader Suthep Thaugsuban who escaped unhurt. This latest incident follows a string of nighttime drive-by shootings at protest sites and grenade attacks on the homes of opposition politicians.
Bangkok Protest Grenade Explosion Close Up
Published on Jan 24, 2014
The Thai capital's main financial district was partially crippled following deadly grenade attacks and a tense standoff between die-hard, anti-government demonstrators and a government that has yielded vital areas of Bangkok to them.
At least five grenades exploded in the city center, killing one person and wounding at least 75, as hundreds of panicked residents fled into the streets.
The explosions come amid a tense standoff between Red Shirt protesters and armed government troops, in a period that has witnessed Thailand's worst political violence in two decades.
More recently, a rival group of protesters has rallied in the area of the attacks, occasionally hurling missiles at the Red Shirts, creating a volatile mix. Several of the blasts were near where these rivals had gathered, under the elevated tracks of the Sky Train.
Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban stated in a televised broadcast that five M79 grenades were fired from launchers within the Red Shirt encampment.
Three fell through the roof of the Sky Train station, which runs above Silom Road, a fourth exploded near a five-star Dusit Thani Hotel and the fifth near a bank.
Reports said the blasts killed one person, identified as a Thai woman, and wounded at least 75. Three foreigners were among the wounded.
Panic was widespread as the injured were carried away. A cameraman filmed a soldier pulling a cab driver out of his taxi when an angry crowd attacked him.
Protesters were seen hurling rocks with sling shots and at one point the police had to take cover as missiles hailed down upon them.
Riot police surged onto the streets during the clashes and several officers were also filmed kicking and vandalising the motorbikes and scooters used by the protesters.
The Red shirts are calling for the dissolution of Parliament and for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to resign.

BBC Malaysia Prime Minister faces social media backlash over 'kangkung' ...

Kangkung - The Social Media Backlash Over Kangkung Comments
Kangkong (water spinash) has enliven the world of news reporting in Malaysia and international, when the social networking site users have a variety of responses.
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's Internet regulator on Thursday denied accusations that it was blocking access to a BBC report about netizens in the Muslim-majority nation lampooning the country's prime minister. Prime Minister Najib Razak's administration faces public discontent over hikes in government-controlled fuel and power prices.
He responded to the criticism in a weekend speech in which he highlighted a drop in the price of water spinach, a common dish in Malaysian cuisine known locally as "kang kong". Malaysians soon began mocking the aristocratic Najib - who recently came under fire for traveling with his wife on luxurious private jets at taxpayer's expense - as being out of touch with common citizens. Critics posted thousands of tweets and a Facebook page simply titled "Kang kong" that pokes fun at Najib has garnered 18,000 likes, while local media said "Keep Calm and Eat Kang kong" t-shirts have gone on sale. British broadcaster the BBC picked up the story in a report on its website Tuesday, but many Malaysian Web-users began to complain that they could not access it about 24 hours later, sparking accusations that it was being blocked by authorities. A spokesman for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) told AFP it had not blocked the page, but said various Malaysian service providers could have acted of their own accord. The problem appeared to mainly affect those using government-controlled Telekom Malaysia's (TM) Internet service.
A TM spokeswoman said the company was "checking with our network team" on the issue. Malaysia's now-57-year-old ruling coalition pledged in the 1980s that it would never censor the Internet, in a bid to lure high-tech foreign investment.
Najib led the coalition to its worst election showing in its history last year as support has slid amid public fatigue over corruption, divisive racial politics and a sense of drift.

Government subsidies have helped keep prices of basic goods low for years. But Najib late last year announced plans to reduce subsidies in a bid to corral spiralling public debt

Now, I know what you are thinking..."A table...for $50k... what's it do... feed me and then clean-up the dishes?"
Well, it's still a round dining table, which you and five family members eat at it like any other table. This difference is -- if you happen to have six more people come over, this thing folds out like a Swiss-army knife designed by a Japanese origami expert!

A Thai anti-government protest leader was shot and killed in Bangkok on Sunday when violence erupted as demonstrators blocked early voting in many areas of the capital ahead of a disputed election next week.
It brings the death toll to 10, with scores wounded, since protesters took to the streets in November, vowing to shut down the capital and force Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office.
A spokesman for the national police, Piya Utayo, identified the dead man as Suthin Tharatin, one of the protest leaders. "Suthin was shot in the head and in the chest," he said.
Yingluck called the February 2 election, hoping to cement her hold on power but the protests have continued and the Election Commission has been pushing to delay the vote.
In a clear setback for Yingluck, a senior government official said that as many as 45 of the 50 polling stations set up in Bangkok for advanced voting had been shut because of anti-government protesters.
Bangkok police said clashes had broken out between anti-government protesters and Yingluck supporters, with the two sides trading punches before shots were fired. The Erawan Medical Center, which monitors Bangkok hospitals, said 11 people were hurt in the clashes in the Bang Na district.
It was not immediately clear who had fired the shots, but the protesters accused the government and police of trying to intimidate them.
"The government has allowed thugs to use weapons," Akanat Promphan, a spokesman for the protesters, told reporters. Private gun ownership is widespread in the country.
The violence, the worst in a month, came after a state of emergency took effect on Wednesday and adds to doubts over whether the February 2 election can go ahead.
Chris Baker, a historian and Bangkok-based analyst, said the violence added pressure on Yingluck to delay the vote.
"It does weaken the government's position. The protesters will blame this on the government," said Baker. "With or without this incident the likelihood for violence was there already. I don't think it changes in the trajectory."
The protests are the latest eruption in a political conflict that has gripped Thailand for eight years and which is starting to hurt growth and investor confidence in Southeast Asia's second-largest economy.
The conflict broadly pits Bangkok's middle class and elite, and followers in the south, against mainly poor rural backers of Yingluck and her brother, ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, in the populous north and northeast.
The protests mark the biggest demonstrations since deadly political unrest in April-May 2010, when Thaksin's "red-shirt" supporters paralysed Bangkok to remove a government led by the Democrat Party, now in opposition. More than 90 people were killed and more than 2,000 were injured in that unrest.
The protesters, led by firebrand former premier Suthep Thaugsuban, accuse Yingluck of being Thaksin's puppet and want an unelected 'people's

Cendol or lot chong ( ลอดช่อง) or chè ba màu.
Published on Feb 3, 2014
Cendol is a traditional dessert originating from Southeast Asia which is popular in Indonesia,Malaysia, Myanmar (where it is known as mont let saung at Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand.
There is popular belief in Indonesia that the name "cendol" is related to and originated from the word jendol; in Javanese, Sundanese and Indonesian, it means "bump" or "bulge", in reference the sensation of drinking the green worm-like jelly. In Vietnam, it is called "bánh lọt," or fall cake. Bánh lọt is a common ingredient in a Vietnamese dessert called chè, or more commonly chè ba màu. In Thailand it is called lot chong (Thai: ลอดช่อง) which can be translated as "gone through a hole", indicating the way it is made by pressing the warm dough through a sieve into a container with cold water.
Ingredients[edit]
The dessert's basic ingredients are coconut milk, jelly noodles made from rice flour with green food coloring (usually derived from the pandan leaf), shaved ice and palm sugar. Other ingredients such as red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly, creamed corn, might also be included.[4]
In Sunda, Indonesia, cendol is a dark-green pulpy dish of rice (or sago) flour worms with coconut milk and syrup of areca sugar. It used to be served without ice. In Javanese, cendol refers to the green jelly-like part of the beverage, while the combination of cendol, palm sugar and coconut milk is called dawet. The most famous variant of Javanese es dawet is from Banjarnegara, Central Java.
The affluence of Singapore, as well as Western influence, has given rise to different variations of cendol, such as cendol with vanilla ice-cream or topped with durian.

Big blast brings down German skyscraper
Published on Feb 3, 2014
A 116-metre-high (380 feet) skyscraper in Germany's Frankfurt am Main was razed to the ground in 10 seconds flat in one of the largest-ever controlled building explosions in Europe.
Thousands of spectators gathered Sunday morning to watch the demolition of the former university tower AfE (or AfE Turm) in the center of Germany's financial capital.
Some 950 kilograms of explosives were inserted into 1,500 holes drilled in the 32-story, 50,000-ton skyscraper in order to destroy it-- making it the tallest-ever building in Europe to be demolished by a blast, Deutsche Welle reported.
In just about 10 seconds after the blast, the tower, built in 1972, vanished in a huge cloud of gray dust.
